Jerzy P. Łukaszewicz was born in Łódź in 1952. He graduated with a degree in chemistry from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń in 1976. His doctorate (1983) and habilitated doctorate (2001) degrees in chemistry were also obtained at the Nicolaus Copernicus University. The professor’s current research activities are focused on nano-structured carbon materials, such as high-nitrogen activated carbons, carbon nanotubes and graphene. Professor Łukaszewicz is an author and co-author of more than 120 research publications, chapters in monographs and patents. He has actively participated in international science conferences in Japan, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, France, Singapore, India, Kuwait, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, South Korea and Poland in the form of more than 90 invited lectures, communications and posters. In the past, concurrent with his employment at Nicolaus Copernicus University, he worked at Mera-Obreus and Sylab-Micromeritics. He participated in long-term research internships in Germany (RWTH Aachen – DAAD scholarship in years 1983-1985) and twice in Japan (Kyushu University – Monbusho scholarship in years 1987-1989 and visiting researcher in 2001). He was an author, co-author and coordinator of projects implemented in Nicolaus Copernicus University and the municipality of Toruń co-financed with EU funds to the amount of more than 100 million zloty. These included the ZUCH UMK, CHEMOKOP, Construction of the Interdisciplinary Center for Modern Technologies at Nicolaus Copernicus University, the Mill of Knowledge Modernity Center, KLUCZ UMK, and most recently AS KIER projects. He is currently a manager of the NCN OPUS 12 research grant and manager and executor of the KUBUS – Komercjalizacja Uniwersyteckich Badań i Usług (Commercialization of University Research and Services) implementation grants. In addition, he is a manager of a research topic in cooperation with the United Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia, and co-director of a grant funded by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences carried out at Kuwait University. Professor Jerzy P. Łukaszewicz is a long-time expert of the National Research and Development Center, for which he has prepared more than 200 opinions. He has reviewed grant applications from international programs of European Commission – 6FP and 7FP, Norway Grants, ERA ENERGY, ERANET, MATERA+, Scientific Cooperation Poland-Taiwan Grants, Poland-Turkey Grants, The Latvian Council of Science and Development and Innovation Funding UEFISCDI. Professor Jerzy P. Łukaszewicz served as associate dean of the Faculty of Chemistry from 2002 to 2005 and as dean of the faculty from 2005 to 2012. Since 2013, he has been a director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Emerging Technologies and until 2022, he was a head of the Department of Chemistry of Materials, Adsorption and Catalysis of the Faculty of Chemistry of Nicolaus Copernicus University. He is a leader of the Hydrogen Technologies and Energy Storage Group.
